Statement from the Executive Director of AFIDEP
These audited accounts are the very first since the formation of AFIDEP in 2009, and its establishment in Kenya as an international non-profit and non-governmental organization in 20 I 0. AFIDEP was set up to facilitate the translation and utilization of research evidence in policy formulation and program design in Africa. AFIDEP seeks to help close the gaps between research, policy, and practice by synthesizing and repackaging research evidence and promoting its use by policy makers and development practitioners at national, regional, and international levels. The Institute also builds local capacity in knowledge translation. Our work currently focuses on and population change and sustainable development; maternal and child health; and reproductive health, family planning, and HIV/AIDS.
During the short period that AFIDEP has been in existence, we have made considerable strides in translating and disseminating research evidence in our areas of focus to relevant African leaders, policy makers, and international development partners. For example, our work has contributed to policy-making processes on population and health in Malawi, Kenya, Uganda, and Lesotho. We have carried out policy and program analyses on family planning, linkages between reproductive health and HIV/AIDS; and integration of population dynamics, environment and climate change; in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania. In pa1inership with various regional organizations including the African Union, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, regional economic blocks, IPPF, and Partners in Population and Development, we have helped strengthen the evidence-base driving regional advocacy efforts. Finally, we have provided the African voice in global development discourses through participation in various policy and agenda-setting meeting and panels convened by UN agencies, the World Bank, and bilateral development pminers such as USAID and DFID.
