Over the last two days, 25-26 July 2017, AFIDEP, UNFPA and HP+ worked with Malawi Members of Parliament (MPs) belonging to the country’s Parliamentary Caucus on Population and Development to define an action plan, outlining activities that the MPs will undertake to tackle population and development issues in the country.
The action plan outlines actions that MPs belonging to the Caucus on Population and Development will undertake in the course of their oversight, legislative and representative functions to respond to some of the urgent population and development challenges in the country. Some of these challenges include high fertility and high population growth rate, early marriages and high rates of teenage pregnancies, low levels of transition from primary to secondary school and completion rates, food insecurity and deteriorating environment, among others.
The Parliamentary Caucus on Population and Development was launched in April 2017 to contribute to the country’s efforts in tackling these challenges. The workshop to define an action plan was conducted in Lilongwe with a select of the MPs belonging to the Caucus. The Caucus has a membership of more than 120 MPs. With an action plan developed, the Caucus will now embark on implementation of the activities identified.
