Since October 2019, the Heightening Institutional Capacity for Government Use of Health Research (HIGH-Res) project has been implementing innovative and politically responsive interventions that sought to strengthen institutional capacity for the use of health research in policymaking in Kenya, Malawi and Uganda. The initiative is implemented by a consortium of institutions working in partnership with the ministries of health (MoHs) in Kenya, Malawi and Uganda, led by the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP). Partner institutions include the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) (Kenya), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) and Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Centre (MLW) (Malawi), and The Centre for Rapid Evidence Synthesis (ACRES) (Uganda).<\/p>\n

As the HIGH-Res project comes to its completion this year, the project team is convening a four-part webinar series to share experiences and lessons from the various interventions. The webinars take place throughout November 2022.<\/p>\n

Webinar 1: Strengthening Capacity of MoH Departments, Divisions and TWGs in Evidence Synthesis and Use in Kenya, Malawi and Uganda<\/strong><\/p>\n

Date: November 4, 2022, 2:00 to 4:00 pm EAT <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In the first webinar HIGH-Res partners from Kenya, Malawi and Uganda will present experiences and lessons from their interventions in the MoHs to strengthen institutional capacities within departments, divisions and technical working groups (TWGs) for sustained use of evidence in decision-making by these structures. Among others, the focus will be on: what worked and what did not work and why; and how country contexts and other factors (such as the COVID-19 pandemic) shaped the design, implementation and results of project interventions.<\/p>\n

Webinar 2: How Can Research Institutions Contribute to Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Government Use of Health Research: Experiences from Kenya and Malawi<\/strong><\/p>\n

Date: November 11, 2022, 2:00 to 4:00 pm EAT <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The second webinar will focus on the experiences and lessons of two research institutions, KEMRI (Kenya) and MLW (Malawi) in strengthening their institutional capacities to be better able to support government and health sector decision-making. The focus will be on the interventions and actions taken by these institutions as part of the HIGH-Res project to enhance their involvement and support to MoHs and other stakeholders in increasing research use in decision-making.<\/p>\n

The third webinar will present experiences and lessons in engaging leadership of key training institutions in Kenya and Malawi to generate commitment and support the necessary processes for introducing evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) curricula in existing training programmes.<\/p>\n

Webinar 4:<\/strong> Incentivizing Evidence Use in Government Agencies \u201cIs It Easier Said than Done\u201d? Experiences from MoHs in Kenya, Malawi, and Uganda<\/strong><\/p>\n

Date: November 25, 2022, 2:00 to 4:00 pm EAT <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In this webinar, the project team will share their experiences and lessons from attempts to introduce incentives for EIDM in existing institutional systems, processes and procedures. The purpose will be to interrogate the understanding of incentives by MoHs, MoHs\u2019 perceptions on EIDM \u201cincentives\u201d and their potential value in improving EIDM practice, and the practicality of introducing incentives in existing systems, processes and procedures.<\/p>\n
