The series provides in-depth, analytical, contextual &amp; evidence-informed discussions on tackling Africa\u2019s urgent development issues by experts, government officials, and the people who experience these issues.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1<sup>st<\/sup> edition of <strong><em>Vantage Point<\/em><\/strong>, experts from AFIDEP and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Southampton<\/a> discuss the demographic dividend, or how African countries can take advantage of their youthful populations to accelerate economic growth.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Demographic Dividend - A Discussion\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8sBD7JCC-k0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The demographic dividend has received tremendous attention by African leaders in the recent past as an important framework that could spur socio-economic development on the continent. The demographic dividend refers to the accelerated economic growth that is initiated by a rapid decline in fertility and mortality that results in a change in the age structure from one dominated by child dependents to one dominated by economically productive working adults.<\/p>\n<p>In January this year, for example, the theme for the 2017 African Union Summit, \u00ab\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.au.int\/web\/en\/slides\/20170330\/2017-theme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investments in the Youth<\/a>\u00a0\u00bb was launched, signifying a positive ideological move towards the uptake of the framework at the regional level. This was important especially since the Summit convenes decision-makers, development partners, the civil society and the media.
