We produce demand driven evidence by working closely with decision makers and policy processes to understand their work, context and information needs, and then synthesise existing evidence (i.e. research and data) to respond to these needs. Further, AFIDEP advocates for the prioritisation of evidence in decision-making processes as well as strengthen institutional and individual capacities of governments, parliaments, and other decision-making agencies in enabling evidence-informed decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>We employ the following strategies in our approach.<\/p>\n<h2>Produce research evidence in order to inform national policies and programmes with evidence<\/h2>\n<p>We produce research evidence and add value to existing data to inform policy and practice. AFIDEP knowledge products include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Systematic reviews:<\/strong> this involves systematic review of data from a wide evidence base to inform decisions on a key policy issue. Systematic reviews are conducted over a long period of time, sometimes over a one-year period<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rapid synthesis: <\/strong>This is a fast review of evidence to provide answers and inform policy decision on issues that require a quick turnaround. Rapid synthesis can be conducted over a week or in a month<\/li>\n<li><strong>Literature reviews: <\/strong>We conduct secondary analyses to provide objective, well considered evidence from multiple sources and across disciplines. In addition, literature reviews allow us to develop modeling tools for policy scenario building that inform most effective interventions that give value for money and produce high impact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We undertake in-depth work focused on specific countries, and conduct comparative transnational and regional data analyses to ensure that decision-makers have the evidence they need to formulate and evaluate effective population and development policies and programmes. In particular, we seek to identify opportunities to improve the quality and reach of social services, especially to under-served populations.<\/p>\n<h2>Direct and sustained engagement of decision-makers with evidence<\/h2>\n<p>AFIDEP goes beyond the conventional research dissemination model to provide direct technical assistance to government teams that design policies and programmes. We have, for example, helped several African governments and development partners develop integrated population and development policies, define roadmaps for achieving their development commitments, and revise their data collection tools to ensure they collect the data they need for decision-making. We also train and mentor policy makers on evidence-informed decision making. This training is on critical decision making processes such as in bill analyses, budget analyses and tracking that are critical to operationalising decisions made.<\/p>\n<p>Our reach extends beyond individual African countries to the regional level through our involvement in, and partnership with, key regional networks and organisations including the African Union Commission (AUC), Network of African Parliamentary Committees on Health (NEAPACOH), Partners in Population and Development-Africa Regional Office (PPD-ARO); regional economic blocks for Eastern, Southern and Central Africa; and the East, Central and Southern African-Health Community (ECSA-HC).<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11707\" src=\"http:\/\/www.afidep.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Rose-Oronje_NEAPACOH-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afidep.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Rose-Oronje_NEAPACOH-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afidep.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Rose-Oronje_NEAPACOH-768x411.jpg 768w, https:\/\/afidep.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Rose-Oronje_NEAPACOH.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/afidep.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Rose-Oronje_NEAPACOH-882x472.jpg 882w, https:\/\/afidep.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Rose-Oronje_NEAPACOH-230x123.jpg 230w, https:\/\/afidep.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Rose-Oronje_NEAPACOH-990x530.jpg 990w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>Enhance interactions between researchers and decision makers<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers are critical to institutionalising a culture of evidence use in governments. To effectively deliver on this role, AFIDEP provides interventions that challenge researchers to move beyond dissemination of their work and enable them to actively engage with decision makers and the policy making processes. We train and mentor researchers in effective writing and communication skills so they are better equipped to deliver their findings in accessible and usable formats to decision-makers who need them.<\/p>\n<h2>Build capacity for research translation, uptake and use across the continent<\/h2>\n<p>To augment our impact, we help policymakers, civil society organisations and other end-users of evidence understand the value of data and research evidence, and how to access, evaluate, analyse, interpret, and use it effectively. We achieve this through technical assistance and comprehensive training and mentorship programmes. We also strengthen the capacity and skills of researchers and knowledge intermediaries in undertaking evidence synthesis, policy analyses, scenario building and forecasting, through training workshops, seminars and internships.<\/p>\n<h2>Strengthen the African voice in global development discourses<\/h2>\n<p>We draw on the analyses we carry out and experiences working with decision-makers in Africa to inform the international development community\u2019s policies and investments in Africa. AFIDEP experts participate in international conferences, high-level development panels and one-on-one meetings with key development partners, to ensure that their priorities for the continent take the perspectives of African professionals into account.
