The Parliament of Malawi will, on Wednesday, 28 February 2018, launch a new project aiming to stimulate reforms needed to improve its effectiveness and impact in steering democracy, upholding good governance, and promoting socio-economic development in the country.
The new project, dubbed the Malawi Parliament Enhancement Project (MPEP), is an initiative of Parliament, with support from technical and development partners, in response to recent studies that have revealed various challenges undermining parliament’s performance.
The project, funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Finance through the Norwegian Embassy in Malawi, is designed to spur partnerships between Parliament, the Executive, and the Judiciary, and strengthen the capacity of Members of Parliament (MPs) and their committees in order to improve the effectiveness of the country’s 193-member legislature.
The Parliament will steer the implementation of the three-year project, drawing on local and international expertise in governance and evidence-informed transformational change.
AFIDEP is the lead technical partner working with the Parliament on the design and implementation of the project’s interventions. AFIDEP will collaborate with the Institute for Policy Research and Social Empowerment (IPRSE) in providing technical assistance to parliament in project design and implementation.
The Speaker of Parliament and top political party leaders will grace the project launch, which will take place at Parliament Building on the evening of 28 February 2018.
