The agenda will outline prioritises for optimising the demand for, generation, translation, and use or consideration of gender data in decision-making (for development policies, investments, and programming) in Africa.
Why Africa Needs an Agenda for Gender Data Generation, Translation and Use
Across African countries, progress is uneven, with only 16 of the 54 countries having closed at least 70% or more of their gender gap. It is estimated that it will take Africa 102 years to close the gender gap. The need for well-targeted policies, programmes and investments to accelerate progress towards achieving the SDGs has been cited as crucial.
To formulate well-targeted policies and programmes and make the right investments, decision-makers need accessible and reliable evidence of the highest quality possible, including gender data, to help identify and address gender disparities.
Gender data is critical for informing priorities and equitable and inclusive policies, programmes and resource allocation decisions that address gender disparities across various social and economic dimensions and assess progress towards gender equality. Yet, various assessments reveal that globally and in Africa, there is a lack of comprehensive gender data for informing national, continental and global development policies, programmes, planning, performance monitoring and accountability, and resource allocation.
