Comprising leading experts in evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM), a global expert panel will on 15 November 2021 at 16:15 – 17:05 (CET), take stock of lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic and key opportunities that have the potential to inform new concepts and practices of knowledge translation.
The global panel discussion will be moderated by John Lavis, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Evidence-Informed Health Systems at McMaster University, and steered by experts:
- Rose Oronje – Director of Public Policy and Knowledge Translation, and Head of Kenya Office at AFIDEP;
- Martin McKee – Professor of European Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine;
- Steven Hoffman – Scientific Director of the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Population and Public Health;
- Vivian Lin – Executive Associate Dean and Professor of Public Health Practice in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong;
- Yodi Mahendradhata – Vice Dean for Research and Development, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia; and
- Shehla Zaidi – Professor of Health Policy and Systems at the Department of Community Health Sciences, Aga Khan University, Pakistan.
The panel discussion takes place as part of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Evidence-to-Policy (E2P) Summit, a three day event that runs between 15 – 17 November. E2P offers a platform for researchers, policymakers, health sector actors, civil society organizations and media representatives to spark new collaborations across the evidence ecosystem. The E2P summit will provide participants an opportunity to explore pathways to strengthening crisis-resilient country capacities, and spurring progress towards achieving WHO’s triple billion targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Globally, response to the COVID-19 pandemic has leveraged on global research and collaboration to prevent and control the spread of the virus.
On one hand, the pandemic has proven that inclusive, multisectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration and networking among those producing, translating, and using different forms of knowledge are crucial to effective evidence-informed decision-making and accountability among stakeholders. However, the pandemic has exposed limitations and need to improve evidence-to-policy processes. It is important that actors (policy-makers, healthcare providers, and research actors) have a better understanding of decision-making processes and needs, as well as of the respective political and policy contexts.
The E2P Summit will provide a forum to capitalize on the lessons learned in evidence-informed decision- and policy-making in times of COVID-19. This is by identifying gaps and opportunities that can inform action and effective use of evidence as a catalyst for policy and societal change.
E2P Summit is organized by WHO’s Evidence-informed Policy Network (EVIPNet), a global leader in empowering countries to put actionable evidence into the hands of users. Keynote speakers include: Angela Merkel – Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany; Michele Bachelet – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; Ban Ki-moon – 8th UN Secretary General; Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus – WHO Director-General; and Soumya Swaminathan – WHO Chief Scientist.
