The National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development (NCAPD), the Kenyan government’s coordinating body on issues related to population and family planning, held The National Leaders’ Population Conference in Nairobi between November 15th and 17th, 2010.

The meeting, last held in 1989, aimed to define Kenya’s population agenda and revitalise family planning as a central part of its development. Kenya’s Vice President, His Excellence Honourable Kalonzo Musyoka, opened the meeting noting that Kenya’s population growth was closely tied with its economic growth.

AFIDEP Director, Dr. Eliya Zulu, gave a presentation to NCAPD’s major donors, in which he highlighted the importance of having a beneficial demographic transition, such that a developing Kenya may maximise the economic potential of a smaller dependency ratio (the proportion of the working-age population to the non-working age population).
