The development community: policymakers, researchers, donors and advocates of family planning are convening in London on 11 July 2017 for the London Family Planning Summit. The Summit, whose predecessor was convened in 2012, is the midpoint of the 2020 goals on family planning. The forum is therefore an opportunity for stakeholders to take stock of commitments made and targets set in 2012.
Dr. Eliya Zulu, AFIDEP’s Executive Director speaks more on the expectations from the Summit and why investing in family planning is critical for development. The Summit also coincides with the 2017 World Population Day whose theme is Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations.
Several countries including Kenya, are holding satellite meetings to mark both the Family Planning Summit and celebrate World Population Day. The Kenya event is being hosted by the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Kenya). The event which shall be held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi, shall be presided by the Principal Secretary, State Department of Planning and Statistics, Mr. Irungu Nyakera, CBS.
