AFIDEP’s Dr Rose Oronje, Director of Public Policy and Knowledge Translation, and Head of Kenya office, will be a panellist at the convening to “Celebrate the African Union Theme of 2024 Through Innovation and Partnerships”. The event is set to take place at the African Union Commission Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 19 – 20 August 2024.
On 19 August 2024, Dr Oronje will speak during a session on “Strengthening AI governance for development across African Union member states,” where she will delve into the critical role that artificial intelligence (AI) policies can play in advancing development across the continent. Her insights will particularly focus on how well-crafted AI governance frameworks can drive progress in key sectors such as health, education, social protection and creating employment opportunities for women and youth.
In addition, Dr Oronje will also address the unique challenges Africa faces in fully harnessing AI’s potential. These include issues related to infrastructure, policy alignment, capacity building, and ethical considerations that must be navigated to ensure AI serves as a force for equitable development across African Union member states.
This event will mark a significant moment for stakeholders interested in Africa’s future, as it brings together thought leaders and experts committed to leveraging technology and innovation for sustainable development on the continent.
