From July 21st 2021 to July 23rd 2022, the United Nation 2nd Open Science virtual conference was held by the Department of Global Communications, Dag Hammarskjöld Library and the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Division of Sustainable Development Goals. The global conference which was themed ‘From Tackling the Pandemic to Addressing Climate Change’, highlighted what Open Science has learned from COVID-19 and how this can be applied in addressing the global climate crisis, at the interface of science, technology, policy and research.
Professor Nyovani Madise, African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) Director of Development Policy, and member of the group of scientists drafting the 2023 Global Sustainable Development Report was a panellist at the conference. Her session under the theme of “Policymakers and Open Science” focused on learning from the pandemic to accelerate action on climate change—emphasising how the pandemic has shown us that people will do all they can to stay healthy and that to tackle global challenges, global partnerships and solutions are required. She further highlighted the need to communicate science in a manner that everyone can understand, while ensuring that researchers from low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) have access to research that is usually out of their reach because of the costs attached.
