Universal Health Coverage (UHC) has been one of the focal themes of discussion at forums, including the United Nation General Assembly, as reflected in goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From 8-12 October 2018, AFIDEP experts will join players involved in health systems and policy research and practice at the Arena and Convention Centre (ACC) in Liverpool, United Kingdom for the 5th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research (HSR2018) in discussions on new ways of financing health; delivering services; and engaging the health workforce, new social and political alliances, and new applications of technologies to promote health for all.
AFIDEP’s Dr Rose Oronje (Director of Science Communications & Evidence Uptake) will be presenting a paper entitled “Contribution of parliamentary health committees in tackling health issues in Africa: Experiences of the Network of African Parliamentary Committees on Health’ on Thursday, 11 October 2018.
“Parliaments have an important role to play in strengthening health systems in Africa through their resource allocation, oversight, legislation and representation functions. The experiences I’ll be discussing at this conference from our work with Network of African Parliamentary Committees on Health provide important lessons for strengthening parliaments’ role in addressing the many health systems challenges in Africa.” Dr Rose Oronje
AFIDEP Senior Knowledge Translation Officer, Violet Murunga, will also be presenting at the symposium on “Knowledge translation experiences, capacities and practices of researchers in low and middle-income countries: a structured literature review’ on Thursday, 11 October 2018.
There are many challenges in attaining health equity and social inclusion, such as complex social, political, environmental and economic determinants of health. For that reason, strengthening health systems requires players from varying fields. For UHC to work, political institutions, existing health systems and community expectations must work well. The forum will engage a diverse group -ranging from high-level policy-makers, researchers and donors to practitioners and advocates- in dialogue on these issues.
Hon. Juliana Lunguzi, a Malawian Member of Parliament (MP) and the Chair of the Parliamentary Health Committee has been sponsored by AFIDEP to attend the symposium where she will be presenting on “The role of Parliament in achieving SDG health targets: A case study of Malawi Parliament’. Hon. Lunguzi says, “the Health Systems Research Symposium is a global community of experts convening and discussing ways of strengthening the health system and also building on health system research. As a parliamentary committee, we see this as an opportunity to interact with others since, in our work of oversight, we are always asked questions on how we can best improve the health systems. In parliament, we are seen as the experts in the health issues and are expected to provide information and without evidence it becomes difficult. So, we are looking at this as an opportunity to interact and see what others are doing and what other avenues of evidence are out there that we can potentially use to advance our agenda.”
The symposium will bring new opportunities to learn from and network with leading experts while also building skills and discovering new tools that can help increase the impact of work. The symposium is organised every two years by Health Systems Global and will bring together up to 2,000 health systems researchers, policymakers and practitioners from around the world. The theme this year is “Advancing Health Systems for All in the SDG era’.
HSR2018 will be hosted by Health Systems Global, co-sponsors, supporters and a consortium of UK organizations led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
