African Institute for Development Policy at World Health Summit Regional Meeting in Nairobi

The African Institute for Development Policy will participate in the upcoming World Health Summit Regional Meeting, taking place on April 27, 2026 at the United Nations Office at Nairobi. 

As part of the summit, AFIDEP will convene a session titled “Financing Universal Health Coverage: Domestic Resource Mobilisation, Private Sector, and Philanthropic Partnerships,” under the sub-theme Health Workforce, Financing, and System Building. 

The session will bring together leading experts, policymakers, and development partners to explore sustainable and innovative financing pathways for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Africa. Discussions will focus on key issues including declining development assistance, fiscal constraints, debt pressures, and the role of private sector and philanthropic partnerships in strengthening health systems.  

The session will be moderated by Dr Eliya Zulu, Executive Director at AFIDEP. It will feature a keynote address by Dr Jackson Otieno, Senior Research and Policy Analyst at AFIDEP, and a panel of experts, including: 

  • Mr Richard Matikanya, Deputy Executive Director for Africa, Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF)  
  • Dr Amit Thakker, Executive Chairman, Africa Health Business  
  • Dr Daniel Mwai, Health Economist and Presidential Advisor on Health Financing in Kenya  
  • Dr Babatunde Omilola, Head of the Public Health Security and Social Protection Division, African Development Bank (AfDB)  
  • Dr Andrea Luciani, Team Lead for External Relations and Partnerships, World Health Organization (WHO)
