Kenya’s health finance reforms, which aim to mobilise domestic resources for health, are confronted with a host of obstacles, such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the escalating other factors that contribute to ill health, such as poverty, food insecurity, and climate change. Despite these challenges, domestic health financing remains crucial and calls for the need to adapt health financing priorities to the current situation in order to sustainably develop Kenya’s health sector.
To this end, the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) is partnering with the Council of Governors (CoG) and the East Africa Community (EAC) to host the Kenya National Health Financing Workshop on 15-17 April 2023, in Machakos, Kenya.
The workshop will bring together County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) Health Financing Technical Thematic Committee and development partners working on health for capacity development, and inclusive planning and commitment to health financing reforms in the context of Kenya’s devolved system of government.
Centred around county-level planning and engagement processes, the dialogue will provide an opportunity for evidence-based discussions and commitment building among key stakeholders, including county governments, to develop a roadmap and tools for addressing the various pillars of health finance as outlined in the Africa Leaders Meeting (ALM) Declaration commitments of 2019.
The ALM commitments include increasing domestic investment in health, convening African Ministers of Finance and Health every 2 years to review progress, establishing regional health financing hubs, engaging the private sector, improving public financial management, digitising the Africa Scorecard on Domestic Financing for Health, enhancing national health financing systems, and improving effectiveness through the strategic use of resources.
